Frederick Buechner – Truth beyond all truths

Quotation from Frederick Buechner’s sermon “The Birth”

Is the truth beyond all truths, beyond the stars, just this: that to live without [Jesus] is the real death, that to die with him is the only life?

— The Wise Man

Frederick Buechner, Secrets in the Dark: A Life in Sermons, “The Birth”

I find Frederick Buechner’s sermon “The Birth” dazzling. In it he takes on the perspective of the Innkeeper (as we saw in A Million Things), then of one of the Wise Men (as we see here), and then of one of the shepherds (a future post). For me, he brings each one to life as someone who is trying to cope in the world, to make sense of it, not just as shallow symbols in a familiar story. I think you would enjoy reading it.

Grace and peace to you…
